Work 4.5: living an entrepreneurial life

What hopes and fears do we associate with self-employment and entrepreneurship? HSG researchers investigated entrepreneurs’ everyday life in a project entitled Work 4.5. An audio stroll through Zurich’s No. 4 and 5 districts provides an opportunity to discover the start-up scene with new eyes.

16 September 2016. When people said "work", they once meant "wage labour". However, employment structures are increasingly changing, particularly in cities. More and more people are becoming "employee entrepreneurs". They are constantly and personally responsible for the configuration, control and marketing of their own working skills and of the actual work they do.

Self-employment between calculation and passion

Is entrepreneurship the ideal solution to our desire for more freedom, creativity, meaning and self-realisation? Or is it more a kind of elimination of borderlines and self-exploitation? These are the questions examined by the Work 4.5 project in a humorous audio stroll through Zurich’s No. 4 and 5 districts.

In both districts, classic artisanal businesses are increasingly complemented by forms of "new self-employment": alternative forms of work organised along the lines of personal responsibility in district- and public-oriented businesses, as well as in the creative and IT industries.

Audio stroll through Zurich’s No. 4 and 5 districts

In the No. 4 district, inquisitive people can find out more about the everyday life of a juice bar creator, a crèche founder and a digital day labourer. Further travelling companions on the audio tour through the No. 4 and 5 districts are a labour psychologist, a futurologist, a marketing expert, a sociologist and "Mr Langstrasse". The audio strolls take about 90 minutes and are brought to a conclusion by a discussion over an aperitif and with a special guest. The meeting point is the Impact Hub Zurich Colab, 131/133 Sihlquai, Zurich. The tour will take place on the following dates:

  • 28 September, 7 p.m. premiere followed by premiere party with DJ Air Afrique
  • 30 September, 7 p.m.
  • 1 October, 3 and 7 p.m.
  • 2 October, 3 p.m.
