10 May 2017. Culture plays a great role at the University of St.Gallen. This is reflected in the numerous works of art on the campus, the public lecture courses and the activities pursued by the University’s own cultural associations. Thus culture may be omnipresent, but it has never been the centre of attention. Nicola Holenstein (21, undergraduate in International Affairs and president of Amplify Music, has long regarded the promotion of culture at the HSG as a special concern: "Cultural education constitutes an integral component of academic education. This is why we want to stage the Culture Days to spotlight our University’s cultural associations and their activities."

Cultural associations at the HSG pooling resources

To begin with, the event was only intended to be a project of Amplify Music. Soon, however, the members of this association realised that the project could be extended to many other cultural associations. Thus Amplify Music and Literaturzirkel combined to form a working group in the sense of an umbrella organisation of the Culture Days. Besides Nicola Holenstein, who chairs the Organising Committee, the initiators of the large-scale project include Mara Deuschle (20) and Céline Kellmann (20).

The mentor and coach of the working group is Prof. Dr. Kuno Schedler, Professor of Management with special focus on Public Management. Nicola got to know him in connection with a lecture on public governance. Since both of them are passionate musicians, Nicola considered him to be the ideal companion for this project and told him about their plans. Kuno Schedler was enthusiastic about them: "I found the Culture Days a great idea. There are so many artistically active students at the HSG, it’s about time they were showcased!" Work started at once. The Organising Committee looked for suitable partners, developed marketing materials and worked out the specifics for the first events. The working group then drew up an event schedule in cooperation with further cultural associations. Thus the associations Sapientia per vinum, Salsita Rica, Uni Chor, proArte, HSG Big Band, Die Tafel, Uni Orchester and Studententheater St.Gallen became involved in the organisation of the event.

Programme of the Culture Days

The programme of the Culture Days is as diverse as the associations involved. Whereas representatives of Universal Music and the Openair St.Gallen provide insights into their daily business in lectures, concerts will take place in the University’s Aula and in the Kugl. The Uni Chor and the HSG Big Band will inaugurate the Culture Days on 16 May; Amplify Music is organising the concluding event on 19 May. Furthermore, participants may look forward to theatre performances of Albert Camus’s Caligula, a book bazaar and a salsa crash course. The HSG will offer a guided tour of its artworks, and Delinat St.Gallen will offer a wine tasting session focusing on the issue of sustainability. Also, there will be a presentation on cultural management. Admission to the events will be free. Registration is required for the salsa crash course, the theatre production and the wine tasting session. More detailed information about the events and a schedule can be found on the official website of the Culture Days, http://kulturtage-sg.ch/www.kulturtage-sg.ch.
