1 February 2020. Professor Alexander Geissler, born 20 July 1979, is a German citizen.

Between 2000 and 2003 he completed vocational training as an IT technician for system integration. Then in 2008 he completed a degree in business engineering at the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin). In 2013 he gained a PhD “summa cum laude” in healthcare management, also at the TU Berlin. The topic of his doctoral thesis was: “A European comparison of diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) – what can Germany learn from other countries?” In 2018 he then qualified as a professor at the TU Berlin and gained his teaching authorisation for the subjects of health economics and healthcare system research. In addition to this, from 2008 to 2013 he was a business assistant and from 2013 to 2018 a post-doctoral assistant in the Healthcare Management department (MiG) at the TU Berlin. Alexander Geissler is a member of the board at the Berlin-Brandenburger Herzinfarktregister and a private lecturer at the MiG at the TU Berlin.

Healthcare economics, care research and healthcare system research

In his empirically driven research, Alexander Geissler deals with questions of healthcare economics, care research and healthcare system research. The main focus here is on the research and development of tools for measuring and monitoring the efficiency of healthcare provision. This includes building blocks for remuneration and incentive systems as well as matters relating to the measurement, representation and transparency of quality. He is increasingly linking the two strands of his research in order to make better statements about the optimal use of funds from the scant resources available for healthcare. One particular element is his international orientation with regard to both his publications and the objects of his research, which is evident in his involvement with supranational organisations such as the World Bank, the European Commission and national ministries and think tanks.

Alexander Geissler has already produced 65 publications during his academic career, of which 25 alone have been in peer-reviewed journals. Particularly worthy of note is his diversified orientation, which includes international journals (Health Policy on multiple occasions) and monographs alike (he has collaborated on four books with other editors and co-authors), as well as a series of publications on the application of his research results in practice.

Broad teaching experience with innovative teaching approaches

For more than ten years Alexander Geissler has been gaining broad teaching experience within various study courses at the TU Berlin (including business engineering, business studies, public health and medicine), the Berlin School of Public Health (BSPH) and the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He also has experience with innovative teaching approaches (e.g. e-learning, blended learning, problem-oriented learning) in various healthcare-related areas, and he has also been closely involved with a variety of topics while supervising dissertations at bachelor, master and PhD level.

Development of the School of Medicine and management of the Joint Medical Masters

Prof. Dr. Alexander Geissler is the first Professor Ordinarius to be appointed for Healthcare Management. The main focus of his appointment is the development of the School of Medicine and supervision of the Joint Medical Masters.
