Wheelchair taxi for people with disabilities

The St.Gallen wheelchair taxi provides a reliable transport service for people with disabilities. In a project of applied research jointly conducted by the Center for Disability and Integration (CDI-HSG) and the Beatrice Ederer Weber Foundation, the continued existence of the flexible door-to-door transport service was secured with two new vans.

22 June 2016. As a rule, the trip to work, to medical-therapeutic treatment and to social activities is a matter of course for people without disabilities, whereas for people with disabilities, this is often a challenge. Therefore a reliable and affordable taxi service such as the St.Gallen wheelchair taxi is an indispensable institution.

The Center for Disability and Integration of the University of St.Gallen (CDI-HSG) set itself the task of contributing in research, teaching and practice to the participation of people with disabilities. In a project of applied research run jointly by the Center for Disability and Integration (CDI-HSG) of the University of St.Gallen, the Beatrice Ederer Wber Foundation and Amag Heerbrugg, Procap St.Gallen-Appenzell received a new VW Caddy Life van that had been specially adapted to carry passive wheelchair users. A second van will be in service from 2017.

Project leader Prof. Dr. Nils Jent, Director of Applied Research at the Center for Disability and Integration (CDI-HSG), is pleased about the conclusion of the two-year project and the related continued existence of the mobility service for people with disabilities: “This transport service removes infrastructural barriers. This taxi service for the City of St.Gallen will once again for years to come enable people with disabilities to get to work, keep medical care appointments or simply to participate in social life without their energy being sapped.”
