Watching a composer at work

Composition – this creative process requires inspiration and intuition. The interplay of all this is demonstrated by the Toggenburg musician and composer Peter Roth on the basis of three of his works. The audience will have an opportunity to watch a composer at work. The three-part lecture series is part of the public programme of the University of St.Gallen (HSG).

16 November 2017. In his three-part lecture series, the musician and composer Peter Roth will illustrate the way in which inspiration and intuition interact in the composition process. He has selected his works Toggenburger Passion, Spinnen – eine Oper und Wisst ihr denn nicht – ein Requiem für die Lebenden for the purpose, since these three great choral works from among his opus, which by now runs to 112 compositions, bring together musical craftsmanship and sound exploration, the culture of the Toggenburg Valley's Alpine pastures and insights provided by quantum physics, spiritual quest and political commitment in an exemplary fashion.

Peter Roth will perform the excerpts discussed during the evenings' lectures on the piano or the Hackbrett (a local variant of the dulcimer), thus revealing what initiates and drives his creative process with regard to text and music.
