2 April 2012. The power and availability of emotions will be debated in the panel discussion as much as the question of the extent to which mass media and social networks with their “cult of friendship” rely on the effect of emotions. How are psychology and the control of emotions used in education? Are only those companies successful which are able to reach consumers’ affects, as does Apple with its product marketing? These are also questions which Verena Kast, Christian von Scheve and moderator Jörg Metelmann will be looking into.

Debate on the effect of emotions
Verena Kast is Professor of Psychology at the University of Zurich, lecturer and analysis trainer at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, a psychotherapist with her own practice, and Chair of the International Society for Depth Psychology. Christian von Scheve works at the Institute of Sociology at Freie Universität Berlin, where he primarily conducts research into the sociology of emotions. Moderator Dr Jörg Metelmann heads the HSG’s “Management Skills” area and a research project on the “Aesthetics of Irritation” about medial emotions and how they can be controlled.

Haniel Seminars about good manners, emotions and performance
In the course of the panel discussion, Jörg Metelmann will also present a new book entitled Die Macht der Gefühle. Emotionen in Management, Organisation und Kultur (Berlin University Press, eds. Jörg Metelmann and Timon Beyes). The book contains contributions by Thomas Elsaesser, Wolfgang Engler, Eva Illouz, Verena Kast, Christian von Scheve and Linda Williams and summarises the results of the seminars. The first book to appear was one about the topic of the year, “Good Manners”, in spring 2011. In the next seminar block, which will start in Autumn Semester 2012, students will look into the topic of “Performance”.
