7 March 2013. Our working world is subject to change. An ageing population in the industrialised countries, technological progress and other social changes are jeopardising existing jobs. At the same time, new forms of work and “job designs” are emerging. They change the way in which we apprehend our work and the way we think about it.

Adaptations to changes in the world of work raise the conflict potential among employers, employees and entrepreneurs. “During the conference, we want to sound out the changes affecting the working world and discuss possible solutions to problems in trade and industry, politics and society,” says Laura Niersbach, one of the conference’s co-organisers. The students who participate in the conference are selected by means of a Europe-wide essay competition. Applicants come from 39 universities in 21 countries.

Public panel discussion

From 15-17 March, students will prepare for the public panel discussion in small discussion groups with HSG professors and extramural experts. The English-language panel discussion on “The Future of Work” will take place in the Audimax of the HSG on 18 March from 3.00-5.30 p.m., with the following guests:

  • Nicola Fielder, Operations Director at Lee Hecht Harrison, an agency for talent development
  • Koos Richelle, Director General of the EU Commission for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion
  • Tomáš Sedláček, economist and Professor of Economics at the Charles University in Prague
  • Daniel Straub, psychologist and business economist, advocate of an unconditional basic income
  • Moderation: Lucy Hockings, BBC World News journalist

Challenge the Best is an initiative of the Student Union of the University of St.Gallen (HSG). The conference chairman is Walter Fust, a member of the Alumni Advisory Board. The Alumni Advisory Board, HSG professors and HSG Alumni Executive Director Daniel Bargetze support the student organisation team.
