The future of eating

"You are what you eat" is what people say in various cultures. What, then, are we when we eat what we eat? From Wednesday, 20 April onwards, Tanja Schneider, Ph.D. will focus on this question and deal with the future of eating. The six-part lecture course will take place as part of the public programme of the University of St.Gallen.

14 April 2016. Eating concerns us all: we eat several times a day, we buy food and many people cook for themselves. In the six-part lecture series on "The future of eating", Tanja Schneider, Permanent Lecturer in Sociology at the University of St.Gallen, will provide insights into a familiar topic of which many aspects still remain unknown. She will explore issues from a sociological perspective. In addition, the sustainability of our eating culture is also a central topic of the lecture course.

In various cultures, people say: "You are what you eat." Schneider inverts the question: "What, then, are we when we eat what we eat?" She will use film material to provide insights into the world of eating culture, but also of foodstuff production and consumption.

What we eat and how we eat it does not only have a significant impact on the future of our society, but also on that of our planet. In her lecture, Schneider will therefore analyse the current debate on the future of eating: who is involved in this debate? What challenges are faced by the various parties involved? What solutions are being proposed?

The lectures will take place at the University of St.Gallen in Room HSG 09-012 on Wednesdays at 8.15 p.m. Dates: 20 April, 2. April, 4 May, 11 May, 18 May and 25 May 2016.
