6 May 2011. On 12 and 13 May 2011,the 41st St. Gallen Symposium will unite students and decision-makers from trade and industry and politics on the campus of the University of St. Gallen (HSG). On Thursday, 12 May, Dominic Barton, Global Managing Director, McKinsey & Company,and Prof. Johan Galtung, the founder of Transcend International,will give public lectures. Both the general public and students are cordially invited to the public session of the St. Gallen Symposium. For students of the University of St. Gallen (HSG),selected discussions and addresses will be transmitted live to the Audimax for the first time.

Decision-makers’ daily business

On 12 Mayfrom 1.30 to3.00 p.m. in the HSG Library (B Building 09), the CanadianDominic Barton will speak about the work that comes across his desk every day. Barton will give his lecture in English. He will be building on his public lecture of last year and report about the experience he has gained in discussions with decision-makers from trade and industry and politics in the course of many years. In particular, he will focus on what has changed in the last twelve months since his lecture at the 40th St. Gallen Symposium.

Justice in society

The Norwegian peace researcher Prof. Johan Galtungwill shed light on ten global and national trends in social justice as opposed to criminal justice. He will give his lecture on 12 Mayfrom3.45 to5.15 p.m. in the HSG Library (B Building 09);the lecture will be held in English. Galtung will use the example of America to explain what the growth of new regions and development models means and what the consequences of China’s boom are. With reference to national justicetrends, he will speak about the rise of women, the growth of local communities and the increase in the disequilibrium between politics and the economy.

Live transmission of the inaugural address byAyaanHirsi Ali
The Max Schmidheiny Lecture will be transmitted to the Audimax on Thursday, 12 May 2011, from 8.15 to 8.40 p.m. The inaugural address of the St. Gallen Symposium will be given by the Dutch politicianAyaanHirsi Ali. The women’s right activist and critic of Islam has received several awards for her commitment. On 18 April 2005,Time Magazinenominated her one of the world’s 100 most influential people.

Panel discussions and lectures

On Friday, 13 May, 1.30 to2.30 p.m., the live transmission of the panel discussion with representatives of Shell and BP can be seen in theAudimax. Robert Dudley, BP’s Group Chief Executive, and JormaOllila, Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell, will focus on the question of “Giant, but powerless?” during the panel discussion. From5.15 to6.30 p.m., the “Leaders of Tomorrow”and the BBC’snews correspondent Dr h.c. Peter Day will talk about what power means from their own points of view. To conclude,the panel discussion on “Energy security – the price we have to pay” will be transmitted to the Audimax from6.30 to7.30 p.m. The panellists are Justin Dargin, Research Fellow of the Dubai Initiative, Moritz Leuenberger, former President of the Swiss Confederation, Prof. Hideichi Okada, Vice-Minister for International Affairs, Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry of Japan, and Prof. Dr. Alexander Wokaun, Head of the General Energy Research Department.
