6 September 2019. One week before the start of the semester, the newly arriving Assessment Year students will gather on the campus of the University of St.Gallen in order to familiarise themselves with the university environment. The Freshers’ Week is an integral part of the HSG’s Assessment Year. It prepares new students for their everyday campus life in terms of both content and organisation.

Freshers’ Week: case study work on "Digitalisation – Switzerland in a time of change"

During the Freshers’ Week,160 tutors supervise the new students in their work on the case study on "Digitalisation – Switzerland in a time of change", as well as with organisational matters. The Helvetia insurance group is already supporting the Freshers’ Week project for the sixth time this year. In the course of the week, the students work on our future in 60 groups, which are organised as think tanks. Their assignment, which has been given them by the Swiss National Science Foundation, is to explore positive and negative effects of digitalisation in five spheres of life in a fictitious case, to identify areas where action is required, to deduce recommendations for specific measures from this and to present their work in the form of a basic research paper. The twelve best groups will present their final products to the jury, the entire new Assessment Year, numerous guests and HSG members at the concluding event in St.Gallen’s Olma Hall 2.1 on Friday, 13 September 2019.

HSG Kick-off Days on the topic of "The City / UniverCity"

On the occasion of the Kick-off Days in the week of 9-14 September 2019, the HSG will also welcome 840 new students to the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. Levels. The introduction programme provides the newcomers with an insight into the organisational processes of campus life, whereas the academic programme presents the HSG’s teaching and learning culture on the basis of a socially, economically, politically and culturally relevant topic.

In Autumn Semester 2019, everything is about the topic of "The City" (programme title: "UniverCity: Changes and Challenges in an Urban Context"). Students will be dealing with different aspects of urbanity, with concepts for an interlinked "smart city", resources, challenges and the urban future. The focus is on St.Gallen. In this way, new HSG students are not only provided with an opportunity to become better acquainted with the city but are also motivated to contribute towards the city’s development with their ideas and innovations. Together with mayor Thomas Scheitlin, the city’s Chief Digital Officer Dr. Christian Geiger, Professor of Organizational Psychology Chris Steyaert and habilitated lecturer and design expert Dr. Monika Kritzmöller, students will address the questions: What are the cities today and what will become of them tomorrow? What should the city in which we live be like? In interdisciplinary workshops, students will develop solutions to urban problems and discuss the topic from different perspectives in brief presentations.

Provisional student numbers

8,988 students are enrolled for Autumn Semester 2019 at the University of St.Gallen (preceding year: 8,669 enrolled students). 1,769 are expected for the Assessment Year (preceding year: 1,783) and 3,207 (3,086) for the Bachelor’s Level. 3,349 (3,167) students are enrolled at the Master’s Level. As usual, the precise enrolment statistics for Autumn Semester 2019 will be published in mid-December. Experience shows that by then, the number of students will have decreased since some students are still trying to find their bearings, do not start their studies or drop out after a few weeks.
