6 September 2017. One week before the start of the semester, approx. 1,700 new Assessment Year students will gather for the Freshers’ Week on the campus of the University of St.Gallen in order to familiarise themselves with the University environment. The Freshers’ Week is an integral part of the HSG Assessment Year and is run in German and English. It prepares fledgling undergraduates for their everyday campus life in terms of both subject-matter and organisation. The 2017 Freshers’ Week is supported by Helvetia Insurance.

About 1,700 new students

Approx. 8,600 students have enrolled at the University of St.Gallen for Autumn Semester 2017 (preceding year: 8,337). 1,741 undergraduates are expected in the Assessment Year (preceding year: 1,735), and 3,026 at the Bachelor’s Level (2,847). 3,216 (3,135) have enrolled for the Master’s Level. 658 (682) students will be studying at the Ph.D. Level.

The enrolment statistics for Autumn Semester 2017 will be published in mid-December as usual; experience shows that the number of students will have decreased by then. This is because some students are still trying to find their bearings, while others will fail to turn up and yet others will drop out of their studies after a few weeks.

Identifying and categorising old-age provision risks

During the Freshers’ Week,160 tutors will supervise the students when they work on the case study entitled "Old-age provision risks in Switzerland – campaign competition". Helvetia Insurance is supporting the Freshers’ Week project for the fourth time this year. During the Freshers’ Week, the case study groups with an average of 24 members will be busy from Monday to Thursday. In the context of a fictitious invitation by the Federal Social Insurance Office, they will produce a campaign aiming to sensitise Generation Y to the issue of old-age provision.

On their way towards a well-founded campaign, the case study groups will analyse facts and figures, relevant stakeholders’ opinions and interests regarding the issue of old-age provision, as well as the characteristics and perceptions of Generation Y.

The new students will present the best campaigns on Friday, 15 September, at the concluding event in St.Gallen’s Olma Hall 2.1 before the jury, all the new Assessment Year students, numerous guests and HSG members.
