The University of St.Gallen is inviting the general public to 38 public lecture series in Spring Semester 2020. As in every semester, professors of the University and regular external teaching staff will offer diverse lectures on a wide variety of topics. The public lecture courses start on 18 February 2020.

5 February 2020. "Whether a preview or a review, if you don't now confront the pressing issues of tomorrow, the past will catch up with you, sooner or later.", writes Prof. Dr Florian Wettstein, head of the public programme, in the preface to the brochure on the public lecture courses at the University of St.Gallen.

Conquests, violence and statesmen

Our programme is steeped in history with regard to a whole series of lectures. With a view to the East, Meinrad Strässle focuses on the conquest and development of Siberia. Ulrich Schmid broaches the difficult issue of violence and ideology in Eastern Europe, which is haunted by the totalitarian dictatorships of the 20th century. Meanwhile, in the West, the US presidential elections are just around the corner. In preparation for this, Claudia Franziska Brühwiler presents the most formative presidents of American history to us, some of them saints, some of them scoundrels. And we all ask ourselves: In which mould will the new one be cast?

Switzerland and Europe

Swiss and regional history also have their place in the programme, however. With Martin Schregenberger, we explore the historical building culture of Eastern Switzerland. Caspar Hirschi's historical lecture on the (complicated) relationship history between Switzerland and Europe is also highly topical. This is intended to place the ongoing tricky discussions about a framework agreement with the EU in a historical context. Finally, Max Lemmenmeier's lecture series pursues new historical questions about topics in Swiss history.
