In the wake of the Arab uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East around 2011, Tunisia was long considered a model country for successful democratization. Since 2019, however, a strongman, President Kais Saied, has been striving for autocracy there as well. He dissolved parliament in 2021 and has ruled alone ever since. In the summer of 2022, the population approved a new constitution with a low voter turnout, which further strengthens the president's power. Despite these developments, the country now faces elections for a new parliament. In the video, Dr. Andreas Böhm from the Center for Philanthropy assesses the significance of this event and explains how the flagship country of the Arab Spring could once again experience an undemocratic turn of events.
