26 April 2010. Friday 7 May, will start with a panel discussion on the topic “The state is not enough”. Doris Leuthard, Christine Lagarde and Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Foreign Trade of the United Arab Emirates, will be analysing the role of the state in a mostly liberalized economy.

Also in the course of Friday, the Danish entrepreneur Morten Lund will deliver his keynote address under the heading of “Entrepreneurship ‒ there is nothing to be afraid of”; he will be speaking about the ups and down in an entrepreneur’s life.

Every year, 200 Leaders of Tomorrow participate in the St.Gallen Symposium and enter into an intergenerational dialogue with the 600 other participants and speakers, such as the Indian Gautam Thapar, Chairman and CEO of the Avantha Group. The Leaders of Tomorrow are made up of 100 students who gave proof of their ability through an essay competition, as well as 100 young entrepreneurs and junior researchers.

How does the coming generation see the future?
This year for the first time, the International Students' Committee, in cooperation with Credit Suisse and the University of St.Gallen, conducted a survey among 400 current and former Leaders of Tomorrow from 60 countries. The interviewees commented on such issues as government policies, globalization, the economy and entrepreneurship.

The study revealed numerous interesting findings. 65 per cent of the Leaders of Tomorrow, for instance, think that states often fail in crucial questions; almost half of the interviewees thought the same about enterprises. 80 are of the opinion that a reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases should have top priority in government programmes, while most of the interviewees still do not want to cut down on driving and flying. 99 per cent of the interviewees think that globalization is positive. And a large majority think that the role of the state with regard to entrepreneurship should primarily focus on the promotion of entrepreneurship. More than 70 per cent supported the free market and federalist states.

From now on, the Global Perspectives Barometer is intended to annually reflect the mood prevalent among young people all over the world and provide a possibility of recording trends over several years.
