12 October 2009. The 2009 Nobel Prize in Economics has been awarded to the US academics Elinor Ostrom and Oliver Williamson. The University of St.Gallen is very pleased about this honor and would like to congratulate Prof. Dr. Oliver Williamson in particular, to whom it awarded the degree of an Honorary Doctor of Economics in 1987.

Honored on the occasion of the dies academicus
On the occasion of the 1987 dies academicus, Williamson was honored for his work, which "contributed to the further development of the theory of economic institutions and forms of cooperation". According to the St.Galler Hochschulnachrichten newsletter, the issues and approaches to solutions dealt with by Williamson had combined economics, business administration and law to work out joint answers to central economic problems.

Besides Williamson, the former Federal Councillor Dr. Kurt Furgler was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law at the 1987 dies academicus.
