20 August 2020. Computer Science has developed into the driving factor for value creation and determines power of innovation and business strength globally, not only of companies, but also when viewing society as a whole. The University of St.Gallen is taking account of this development: supported by the IT education drive by the Canton of St.Gallen, it has now founded its new School of Computer Science. The five disciplines, already in place since 2018, consisting of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Interaction and Communication-based Systems and Software Systems Programming and Development will now be expanded with more disciplines on an ongoing basis.

"First of all, we would like to contribute towards embedding HSG in the region by way of cooperation projects with the eastern Swiss economy, while also becoming an internationally conspicuous Computer Science location", says Prof. Dr. Barbara Weber, dean of the SCS-HSG since its inception. One area which Weber is researching is the customised design of software applications. "I enjoy the start-up atmosphere that we have here", she says. "We are all working on the setup of our school and the St.Gallen Computer Science degree course with a great sense of fun and get-up-and-go."

Studying Computer Science in St.Gallen

Helping to shape future technologies while gaining solid business knowledge. This is what the new Master's degree course in Computer Science (MCS-HSG) at the University of St.Gallen is offering from the Autumn of 2021. According to the motto "Where computer science meets entrepreneurship", HSG combines a technical Computer Science degree course with contemporary basic disciplines, and the teaching of skills in new business models, digital innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership gives the option to specialise. The course offers a comprehensive base for a professional career as an Computer Science entrepreneur or in management at an IT company. For the first time at the University of St.Gallen, this specialisation culminates in a Master of Science. Applications can be submitted from the start of October 2020.

Specialisations in Data Science or Software and Systems Engineering

The Master’s can be optionally supplemented with specialisations in Data Science or Software and Systems Engineering. The language of instruction is English. "We are very much looking forward to welcoming the first Computer Science students to HSG", says Prof. Dr. Siegfried Handschuh, head of the new Master's programme and Chair of Data Science.

In line with the specialisation, his professional interest is in the use of large data quantities, in particular of text and language data. "Our Master's degree course will be characterised by an innovative and unique combination of our areas of specialisation in Computer Science and the skill to apply this in today's economy", he says. "It goes without saying that there is close support and personal exchange with our students."
