Focal point migration: six perspectives
No one knows what impact the wave of refugees from Syria will have on European politics and society. This is why six academics and directly involved actors will deal with the complex issue of migration from Wednesday, 2 March onwards.

24 February 2016. The surface of the Cantons of St.Gallen, Thurgau and the Grisons is roughly identical with that of Lebanon, where about 1.6 million refugees are living at present. In Eastern Switzerland, there are fewer than 5,000. Do we have a luxury problem – or rather a reason for apprehension? In the public lecture series "Focal point migration: six perspectives", academics from various disciplines and directly involved actors comment on the political, social, legal and cultural implications of the refugee crisis. The speakers will start off with an input lecture and engage in a discussion with the audience.

The first lecture will be given by Prof. Dr. Christoph Frei on 2 March. The Professor of Political Science with special focus on International Relations at the University of St.Gallen will talk about "An introduction: an interdisciplinary overview". A week later, on 9 March, the HSG will welcome Prof. Dr. Kay Hailbronner from the University of Constance. The legal expert will lecture on "The asylum law of the European Union". On 16 March, the Director of the Swiss Red Cross, Markus Mader, will give his lecture on "Supporting people who are fleeing".

"The picture of refugees in the media" will be the topic on 23 March. The lecture will be given by Kaspar Surber, Deputy Editor of the Wochenzeitung. On 30 March, Prof. Dr. Marc Helbling will home in on the "Perception of Muslim migrants". The Professor of Political Sociology will travel from the University of Bamberg to St.Gallen for the purpose. The final lecture will be given on 6 April by Prof. Dr. Oliver Diggelmann from the University of Zurich. The topic tackled by the Professor of International Law, European Law, Public Law and Political Philosophy will be "The protection imperative of international law".
The lectures will take place at the University of St.Gallen in Room HSG 01-014 on Wednesdays at 6.15 p.m. Dates: 2 March, 9 March, 16 March, 23 March, 30 March and 6 April 2016.
