The Walter Adolf Jöhr lecture by Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Paul de Grauwe on the topic of “Managing the Fragility of the Eurozone” will deal with the particular problems that a monetary union produces for financial policy. Against this background, de Grauwe examines in detail the reforms which the heads of state have launched in the last few months.

On the eve of the dies academicus
The public lecture traditionally takes place on the eve of the dies academicus, i.e. on Friday, 11 May 2012 at 11.15 a.m. in Room 09-010 (Audimax) in the Library Building of the University of St.Gallen. Admission is free.

Highly regarded academic
Paul de Grauwe combines scientific originality and thoroughness, practical relevance and political commitment in an impressive and exceptional manner. Since the eruption and aggravation of the European debt crisis, he has commented on the future of European integration in a great number of publications in scientific organs and popular media. Between 1991 and 2003, Paul de Grauwe worked in various functions in the Belgian parliament – as a senator, as a member of parliament and as Chairman of the Economic and Finance Committee. Finally, his judgement is also in demand in European politics, for instance as a member of the Group of Economic Policy Analysis, which advises EU Commission President José Manuel Baroso. Paul de Grauwe’s commitment to science and economic policy led him to professorships and visiting professorships at many universities and institutions in Asia, Europe and the US.
