Appointment: Stephan Böhm

Prof. Dr. Stephan Böhm has been Associate Professor for Diversity Management and Leadership at the University of St.Gallen since 1 February 2019.

1 February 2019. Prof. Dr. Stephan Böhm was born on 3 October 1978 and is a German and Swiss citizen.

Böhm completed his degree course in business administration at the University of St.Gallen in 2003. Following his degree course, he gained his Ph.D. at the University of St.Gallen in 2008 on the topic "Organizational Identification – Antecedents, Consequences, and Implications for Management". During his Ph.D. he was a member of the research staff and from 2008 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Leadership and Human Resource Management under Prof. Dr. Heike Bruch. Following a research period at the University of Oxford supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), he was appointed to the post of Assistant Professor for Business Administration at the University of St.Gallen. Since 2009 he has managed the Center for Disability and Integration (CDI-HSG) at the University of St.Gallen as Managing Director. In 2015, he rejected the offer of the Dr. Arend Oetker Chair for Business Psychology and Leadership at the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management and was appointed Associate Professor and Permanent Lecturer for Business Administration at the University of St.Gallen.

Research: Diversity, staff management and human resource management

Prof. Dr. Stephan Böhm conducts research into the topics of diversity, staff management and human resource management. In particular, he studies the effects and management of age- and disability-related diversity at the workplace and is seen as one of the world’s leading academics in these areas. The results of his research have been published in numerous academic journals, including "Academy of Management Journal", "Journal of Management", "Journal of Management Studies", "Journal of Organizational Behavior", "Leadership Quarterly" and "Personnel Psychology". Prof. Dr. Stephan Böhm has received numerous awards, including the "Saroj Parasuraman Award" from the Academy of Management, which is considered one of the most important prizes in the area of diversity research. Böhm is also on the editorial board of several academic journals. He is currently widening his research focuses through the analysis of the context of digitization, new work forms and the health of employees.

Successful partnerships with companies and public institutions

Many of his research projects and studies are based on successful practical partnerships. For instance, he has conduced multi-year field studies on the promotion of health, diversity and inclusion in the regular labour market alongside AUDI AG, Barmer Krankenversicherung, UEFA and the Social Insurance Institution of the Canton of Zurich, among others. Further studies were sponsored by the Federal Department of Home Affairs and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF).

Many years of teaching experience

Prof. Dr. Stephan Böhm has many years of teaching experience. He teaches Bachelor, Master and MBA courses as well as executive education in German and English. He offers both practical formats (including "Leadership in European Companies") and research-focussed courses (for instance, "Research in Diversity"). He was honoured for his teaching work in 2014 when he was named the top executive lecturer out of a total of 230 people, receiving the Teaching Award of the European Business School (EBS) REMI Executive Education (Oestrich-Winkel, Germany).
