Sabrina Eisenbarth obtained a Bachelor of Science in International Economics with emphasis on China when she graduated from the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen with distinction in 2010. She transferred to the University of Nottingham, where she completed her Master of Science in Economics and International Economics with distinction in 2012. She stayed in Nottingham for her doctorate in economics. During her doctoral studies, she was a visiting researcher at the University of British Columbia in Canada. She defended her doctoral thesis entitled “Essays on International Trade, Environmental Regulation and Resource Management” in 2016 and subsequently moved to the Oxford Centre for the Analysis of Resource Rich Economies (OxCarre) at the University of Oxford as a postdoctoral researcher. She was a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the University of Exeter between 2018 and 2022 and has been a Senior Lecturer since 2022.

Research in the field of environmental economics

Prof. Sabrina Eisenbarth performs research into solutions for environmental problems in a globalized world. Her research focuses on two areas. Firstly, it deals with the interplay between international trade and environmental protection. For example, her research shows that the Chinese government used export restrictions to reduce pollution and the mining of natural resources. Secondly, she conducts research into the sustainable management of renewable resources, such as fish stocks and forests. The protection of forests in particular is also relevant for climate policy. Prof. Eisenbarth is currently working on an externally funded project that analyses how to design afforestation in Great Britain to sequester greenhouse gases and protect biodiversity at the same time. Since renewable resources are not always privately owned but are often managed collectively, she also explores possible mechanisms and institutions for improving collaboration amongst resource users. 

Among other things, two of her papers have been published in the leading international journal for environmental economics, the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management (JEEM); two other papers have been published in a leading multidisciplinary journal, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
