Appointment: Peter Hongler

Prof. Dr. Peter Hongler takes up the role of Professor of Tax Law at the University of St.Gallen as of 1 August 2019. In doing so, he succeeds Prof. Dr. Robert Waldburger.

1 August 2019. Prof. Dr. Peter Hongler, born 21 June 1984, is a Swiss citizen.

Prof. Dr. Peter Hongler completed a Master of Law degree at the University of Bern between 2004 and 2008. Later, in 2011, he gained a doctorate at the University of Zurich under the chair of Swiss and international fiscal law. The subject of his dissertation was "Hybrid financial instruments in national and international fiscal law in Switzerland". Between 2011 and 2014, he completed training as a tax expert, gaining his diploma successfully in 2014. He subsequently became a post-doc research fellow up until 2016 at the International Bureau for Fiscal Documentation (IBFD) in Amsterdam, where he remains an adjunct research fellow today.

Specialization in international fiscal law

Prof. Dr. Peter Hongler works primarily in the area of international fiscal law and integrates interdisciplinary references into his work. In particular, his thesis entitled "Justice in International Tax Law, A Normative Review of the International Tax Regime" researches the normative foundation of international fiscal law, drawing on the theories of justice from political philosophy as a point of reference.

With longer spells spent researching at two institutions abroad (International Bureau for Fiscal Documentation, IBFD, and the Institute for Austrian and International fiscal Law at Vienna University of Economics and Business), he has developed an internationally recognized research portfolio for himself. As a result, Prof. Dr. Peter Hongler has been called upon as an economic advisor for various matters by national and international institutes and organizations such as the OECD and the European Union. Furthermore, he has spent several years providing advice as a consultant to a business law firm in Zurich.

Many years of teaching experience

Prof. Dr. Peter Hongler has had a broad range of teaching experience over many years. For some years now he has been a student supervisor on the LL.M. and CAS programme "International Tax Law UZH" and a lecturer in fiscal law at the University of Zurich. In addition to this, he has held lectureships at the University of Cape Town and Zurich University of Applied Sciences. He gave lectures and seminars on Swiss, international and European fiscal law and has been a guest lecturer at various universities at home and abroad.
