Appointment: Martin Eling

Prof. Dr. Martin Eling has been a Full Professor of Insurance Economics at the Institute of Insurance Economics (I.VW-HSG), where he also occupies the position of a Director, since 1 November 2011.

Prof. Eling was born on 21 November 1977 in Thuine, Germany. He is of German nationality.

Studies in economics and business administration
He completed his studies in economics and business administration at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. From 2003 to 2005, he was on the research staff of the University of St.Gallen, at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and at RWTH Aachen University.

Acatis Value Prize
In 2005, he was awarded the degree of Dr. rer. pol. with the distinction of summa cum laude. The topic of his doctoral thesis was Hedgefonds-Strategien und ihre Performance im Asset Management von Finanzdienstleistungsunternehmen [Hedge-fund strategies and their performance in the asset management of financial service providers). His thesis was awarded the 2006 Acatis Value Prize.

Visiting Professor in Wisconsin-Madison

From 2005 to 2009, he was a research assistant and worked on this habilitation thesis at the University of St.Gallen. In 2008, he worked as a Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for six months. In 2009, Dr. Eling habilitated at the University of St.Gallen with a thesis entitled Essays on Risk, Performance and Solvency in the Financial Services Industry. He has been Professor of Insurance Economics at Ulm University since 2009.

Main field of research: empirical insurance
Prof. Eling’s research mainly focuses on empirical insurance economics. He publishes his work in academic journals, for which he also works as a peer reviewer, among them the Journal of Banking and Finance, the Journal of Risk and Insurance, and Insurance: Mathematics and Economics. His research work has been awarded prizes, for instance by the American Risk and Insurance Association and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Director at the I.VW-HSG
As a Professor of Insurance Economics at Ulm University, Martin Eling taught at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral Levels. At the University of St.Gallen, he will mainly lecture on insurance economics, value- and risk-oriented steering, and empirical research in insurance in the management major at the Bachelor’s Level and in the MBF and MAccFin programmes at the Master’s Level. He will also make contributions to various areas in the executive education programmes offered by the I.VW-HSG. At the I.VW-HSG, Martin Eling will exercise the function of a Director.
