Appointment: Judith Walls

Prof. Dr. Judith Walls is to be a full professor of Sustainability Management as of 1 February 2019, as the successor to Prof. Dr. Dyllick.

1 February 2019. Prof. Dr. Judith Walls was born on 2 August, 1973 and is a citizen of the Netherlands.

In 1996, Prof. Dr. Judith Walls completed her B.A. (Hons) in Hispanic Studies at the University of Stirling. She was then employed as Director of Research/Consulting at Thomson Reuters for four years in London and three more years as Vice President of New Business Development at Thomson Reuters in Asia-Pacific. During this time, she received an MBA from the National University of Singapore in 2000. She spent a year in Namibia as a volunteer for the Cheetah Conservation Fund. In 2007, she obtained a PhD at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy NY, USA); the title of her dissertation was "The impact of corporate governance on environmental strategy".

She then took a position as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise, Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. In 2009, she became Assistant Professor at the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, Montréal (Canada). In 2013 she took a position as Assistant Professor in Strategy, Management & Organization at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Since 2016, she has also been both Faculty Affiliate at the Asian School of the Environment at the Nanyang Technological University as well as Research Fellow at the Center for Organizational Research and Design at Arizona State University. She is Chair-Elect of Division ONE – Organizations & the Natural Environment at the Academy of Management (AOM).

Research focus: corporate governance and sustainability

Prof. Dr. Judith Walls' research focus is on the interface of corporate governance and sustainability. She thus studies the factors influencing the environmental and social performance of companies. Her research has been published in leading international management journals (including Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Business Ethics, Business & Society) and has received several prestigious awards. The empirical focus of her work is not only on industrialized nations, but also on companies in developing countries. For example, she has studied the mining industry in Mongolia and trophy hunting in Namibia.

Broad teaching experience on all levels

Prof. Dr. Judith Walls has broad experience at all levels of teaching (Bachelor, Master, MBA, PhD). Her lecture activities focus on the topics of corporate strategy and sustainability management. Her didactic skills also include extensive experience with digital course elements. She uses interactive teaching and learning methods, such as case studies and flipped classroom formats, which she supports with her own blog.
