Appointment: Florian Wettstein

Prof. Dr. Florian Wettstein has been Full Professor of Business Ethics at the Institute for Business Ethics (IWE-HSG) since 1 February 2013.

Florian Wettstein was born on 10 June 1975. He is a Swiss national and obtained his Licentiate’s degree in Business Administration/Economics from the University of St.Gallen. In 2007, he was awarded the degree of a Dr. Oec. for his monograph on “Multinational Corporations and Global Justice-Human Rights Obligations of a Quasi-Governmental Institution.”

From project management to business ethics
After working for Zurich Life from 1996 to 1997, Prof. Dr. Florian Wettstein worked on the editing staff and as a project manager for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and then, from 2002 to 2004, as a project manager for Roesch Möbel AG in Winterthur.

In 2002, Prof. Dr. Florian Wettstein also became a member of the research staff at the HSG’s Chair of Risk Management. From 2003 to 2004, he worked at the Institute for Business Ethics. Subsequently, he did research work at the Carroll School of Management of Boston College with a scholarship from the Swiss National Science Foundation. Additionally, he was a Fellow of the MIT Program on Human Rights and Justice and Sessional Assistant Professor at York University in Toronto.

From 2007 to 2011, he researched and taught at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis/St. Paul, USA as an Assistant Professor. Since Autumn Semester 2011, he has been Assistant Professor of Business Ethics at the HSG and, together with Prof. Dr. Thomas Beschorner, Director of the Institute for Business Ethics.

Business ethics from the perspective of human rights
Prof. Dr. Florian Wettstein’s research focuses on business ethics from a human rights perspective, on normative theory, on political economics and on development ethics.

Besides his doctoral thesis, which was published by the reputable Stanford University Press, his list of publications contains a further monograph, which he co-authored with a colleague. In addition, he regularly has articles published in the most highly acknowledged journals in the field of business ethics and is a member of the editorial board of the renowned Wiley Encyclopedia of Management (Business Ethics Volume).

Prof. Dr. Florian Wettstein has been engaged in academic teaching since 2003 and is now also strongly involved in the teaching of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS-HSG). In Contextual Studies, in particular, he is responsible for important courses on economic and corporate ethics, corporate governance and corporate social responsibility.
