Research: Management Accounting and Information Systems

Prof. Dennis Fehrenbacher's research focuses on management accounting and information systems, and specifically digital technologies and their potential use for corporate management. The focus is particularly on behavioural aspects, which are preferably analysed in experimental settings. Thus, for example, in one project he uses eye-tracking experiments to investigate how the perception of responsibilities influences information processing in performance evaluations. In another project, he researches how information overload affects the performance of management accountants and how using IT can help. Prof. Dennis Fehrenbacher frequently uses an empirical-quantitative approach including experiments and questionnaire-based surveys. He publishes in very high-quality journals, including Management Accounting Research and the Journal of the Association for Information Systems. He currently serves as an Editor for Decision Support Systems and is a member of the Editorial Board of Behavioral Research in Accounting. His research has already received several awards.

Long-standing and extensive teaching experience

Prof. Dennis Fehrenbacher has extensive and long-standing teaching experience in German and English in Management Accounting in Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes. In 2020, he received a faculty commendation for outstanding teaching evaluations for his "Integrated Systems for Business Enterprises" course. He takes an interactive approach to teaching and aims to enable students to not only apply management accounting tools, but also to critically question their application and results in light of research findings. In doing so, he consciously incorporates behavioural aspects of his research into teaching to prepare students for the workforce.
