Appointment: Beatrix Eugster

Prof. Beatrix Eugster has been Full Professor of Disability Economics and Integration at the University of St.Gallen as of 1 February 2022.

1 February 2022. Prof. Beatrix Eugster studied economics at the University of Zurich where she successfully completed her degree in 2006. During her studies, she spent a year at the University of Skövde (Sweden). Following her Master's degree, Prof. Beatrix Eugster initially began her PhD studies at the University of St.Gallen, which she continued in 2007 at the University of Lausanne, where she received her doctorate in 2012. The title of her doctoral thesis is “Unemployment, Culture, and Policies” and she was awarded the Prix de Faculté by the University of Lausanne. Her supervisor was Prof. Rafael Lalive. During her doctoral studies, she worked as a research assistant at the University of Lausanne. From 2012 to 2013, Prof. Beatrix Eugster worked at the Center for Disability and Integration (CDI-HSG) as a post-doc and lecturer. In 2013, she was appointed Assistant Professor of Economics. Since 2016, she was Director of the CDI-HSG. Since 1 February 2022 she is Director of the SEW-HSG.

Research in the field of applied econometrics

Prof. Beatrix Eugster conducts research in the field of applied econometrics. She employs microeconometric methods to gain new insights into social, labour market and education economics. During her academic tenure, she conducted research on the project “Schooling Children with Special Needs”, which was funded by the SNSF for three years. This research, as well as the follow-up projects, are highly relevant to society, which is reflected in the considerable interest shown by policy makers in her research findings. She is also researching the effects of cultural diversity on individual and political outcomes in the project “Ethnic clustering in schools and occupational choice: Evidence from Switzerland”, for which she was able to obtain funding from the University of St.Gallen’s Basic Research Fund (GFF).

Research awards for publications

During her assistant professorship, Prof. Beatrix Eugster published on average one publication per year in an A or A+ general economics journal (e.g. Journal of Public Economics) or in one of the leading field journals. Several publications have been awarded research prizes at Switzerland and abroad. For her publication in the Journal of Political Economy, Prof. Beatrix Eugster received the IIPF Young Economist Award 2011, the Distinguished CESifo Affiliate Award 2014 and the SAGW Young Researcher Award Silver 2020. For the publication in the Review of Economics and Statistics, Prof. Beatrix Eugster and her co-authors were awarded the Swiss Prize for Educational Research 2021. Furthermore, she was awarded the University of St.Gallen’s Latsis Prize in 2019 for her research on the inclusion of people with disabilities in society.
